This is a large Ayres rocking horse that has had a full restoration by Collinsons at some unknown date. The paintwork displays some age, suggesting a restoration date of circa 1960/70s, possibly earlier. The fixed saddle is in leather, good condition, but with some wear consistent with age. The remaining tack is leatherette, as typically used by Collinsons, the reins and stirrup leathers in leather are probably later replacements. The mane and tail is blonde cow hair, again as typically used by Collinsons, along with Collinsons rosettes either side of the head and on the chest. The stand has been painted a burgundy red, probably with his Collinsons restoration. The style and four pin brackets are strongly indicative of Ayres. Pommel holes can be felt under the saddlecloth, indicative of a pre-WW1 date.

Frederick Henry Ayres was one of the leading late Victorian toy and rocking horse manufacturers. Probably second only to Lines in output, many would regard Ayres as more classic. F H Ayres was innovative with a string of interesting patents for rocking horse designs. The firm was based at 111 Aldersgate, London from 1864 until 1940, supplying most London department stores, such as Harrods as well as being widely exported. Ayres rocking horses are undoubtably the most collectable of antique rocking horses.
